2017-18 Welcome Letter
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Fifth Grade at North Ridge Elementary School. I am very happy and excited to be your teacher for the 2017-18 school year!!!!!!! Parent/teacher communication is very important to me. I will strive to notify you of events or happenings in our classroom promptly, so that you may plan accordingly. I encourage you to e-mail me or drop me a note with any concerns or questions. In return, you may expect e-mails, notes, or phone calls from me, as well as scheduling conferences, if needed. I don’t let problems get bigger and bigger--if there are homework, classwork, or behavior problems, I like to “nip them in the bud”. I believe in TEAMWORK and total cooperation involving teacher-parents-student!!!!!!! Please make use of e-mail!!!!!! It is quick and I can probably answer your concerns or questions within an hour or so. I would encourage you to check your e-mail daily (just in case I’ve sent you info---it won’t take long to check!!)
I certainly don’t want to appear “nosey” or personal; but, please keep me informed of anything at home, etc. that could affect your child in the classroom. I can’t tell you how important this is!!!!!!!!!!!
Class work will be sent home every Monday in the student’s folder. Please sign the sheet attached to the folder and return the next day. This is very important!!!!!! There should be NO surprises to you or your child with this weekly display of work. I DO WANT ALL PAPERS RETURNED TO ME. This may be different from what was requested of you last year. I will keep these returned papers in a file until the end of the quarter. This way, when you come in for a conference, we’ll have papers to review together.
Homework will be given Mon.-Thurs.--Please expect it!!!! I will not give homework assignments on Friday (unless they are long term assignments--ex. book reports or projects). I do expect all students to be responsible and keep up with the agenda. Students are to record homework, project due dates, and other info given throughout the day. They need to take their agenda to all classes. The agenda is a really BIG DEAL and a POWERFUL ORGANIZATIONAL/COMMUNICATION TOOL!!!! I would like for parents/guardians to review and initial the agenda each day. I will randomly check these throughout the week. Do not sign a blank page (your child has not written anything at all). We do expect students to read for a total of 120 minutes a week. This can easily be accomplished by setting aside 20-30 minutes a night. Reading during the weekend will certainly make that an easy goal to meet!! We will be discussing how to select a book that is appropriate for each student. We want the students to enjoy reading and to read on their level. If we start out with all of these routines, we can establish good work habits right away.
Please make sure that your child has a healthy breakfast to start the day. The brain needs food to work at its full potential!! We will have snack at 10:00 and lunch from 12:45-1:15.
RULES
1. Come to school prepared with supplies and homework each day.
2. LISTEN-- and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
3. Raise hand rather than blurting out answers--(this gives everyone a chance)
4. Respect other people and property
5. Keep desk and cubby clean--take pride in our room’s appearance
6. Display proper manners and behavior--we are representing our schools at all times
7. Be kind to one another--no ganging up or leaving out
8. Know that Ms. Peters has high expectations for you (as well as all NRE STAFF)--you are the “seniors” of North Ridge--all of the “little ones” are watching you!!!!!!
9. Walk in all halls, classrooms, gym, cafeteria, etc. –REMEMBER P.R.I.D.E.!!
10. Set a good example for others
11. TRY YOUR BEST--TRY YOUR BEST--TRY YOUR BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!Effort really means everything to me!!
In fifth grade, students have the opportunity to work with all 4 teachers throughout the year. We have flexible grouping in math when students go to their designated class. This particular class may change for your child in keeping with his/her needs. It is crucial to find the correct math class for your child. Changing classes is important in getting your child ready for middle school, allowing your child to work with different teachers who have different personalities and teaching styles. A major goal is to help your child become more organized and being accountable for his own learning. Students are expected to arrive to all classes with the proper materials each day. It is very disruptive to have to go back for missing items. Social Studies and Science will be alternated every four weeks or so. Our four units of study for science are: Ecosystems, Human Body, Motion and Design, and Weather. Students will rotate through the four areas with the following teachers:
Peters Ecosystems
Bedford Motion & Design
Cyr The Human Body
Jarrett Weather
Fifth grade students are tested in May with a Science EOG along with the Reading and Math. So, it is CRUCIAL that your child is here for our lessons. Please have your child in my room between 8:00-8:25. Our school day BEGINS at 8:30. I will collect homework and other papers during this time, as well as folders, notes from home, etc. Our schedule is extremely structured. We will be STARTING our academic work promptly. PLEASE….PLEASE… AVOID EXCESSIVE TARDIES/ABSENCES. We do not want your child to miss ANY lessons (unless they are ill). These simply can’t be duplicated –-students missing classes will not get those key concepts and will miss instruction on new skills, etc. Please help us by making sure that your child is coming to school every day and is on time! Thank you in advance.
We will be on a 5 DAY ROTATION OF SPECIALS. P.E. will be the most important day because the students need to have the proper shoes, clothing, etc.

I know this is wordy. I find that if I tell you all of this right away, it helps things go more smoothly. It’s important to know all expectations and routines at the beginning! I look forward to working with you all.
