AIR MASS the weight of air in an area - area of air with the same qualities
AIR PRESSURE the amount of force air puts on an object
ANEMOMETER measures wind speed and direction (velocity)
ATMOSPHERE blanket of gas that surrounds the Earth
BAROMETER measures air pressure
CIRRUS thin, wispy clouds located high in the sky that commonly have ice
CLIMATE the average weather conditions over a very long period of time
CLOUD a collection of millions of tiny water droplets or ice crystals
CLOUD COVER the amount of clouds in the sky (partly/mostly)
CONDENSATION the change of a substance from a gas (water vapor) to the liquid state (water droplets) CONVECTION air warms --> rises --> cools --> falls
CUMULUS big puffy clouds that resemble cotton balls
CUMULONIMBUS big, dark, puffy clouds that produce rain
DEW POINT temperature at which water vapor turns into clouds
EVAPORATION the change of phase from liquid water into a gas, water vapor
FORECAST a meteorolist's best guess at what the weather will be
FRONT an area where two air masses meet - could cause thunderstorms H symbol on a weather map for high pressure
HUMIDITY the amount of water vapor in the air

LAND BREEZE the movement of air created by cool air over land moving toward the ocean (night)
LIGHTNING a discharge of electricity in the atmosphere
METEROLOGY the study of weather
METEOROLOGIST a scientist who studies weather
MILIBAR units that indicate the level of air pressure
MOUNTAIN BREEZE the movement of air caused by cool air sinking and moving down the slope of a mountain OCCLUDED FRONT the area in which a warm air mass is caught between two cold air masses - brings cool temperatures and plenty of rain and snow
PRECIPITATION any form of water that falls from the sky
PSYCHROMETER measures relative humidity (water vapor)
RAIN GAUGE measures the amount of fallen precipitation
SEA BREEZE the movement of air caused by cool air over the ocean moving toward land (day)
STATIONARY FRONT the area in which a warm air mass and a cold air mass but neither of them has enough energy to push against each other - brings many days of overcast & rainy weather
STRATUS sheet like clouds that can hang low enough to touch the ground (fog)
TEMPERATURE measurement in degrees (F/C) which indicates how hot/cold it is outside
THERMOMETER measures temperature
THUNDER the sound that results from lightning
VALLEY BREEZE the movement of air created by warm air rising and flowing up the slope of a mountain
WATER CYCLE the movement of water on Earth that moves between the land, the air, and the ocean
WEATHER the temporary state of atmosphere at a certain time and place (temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed/direction)

HABITAT a physical space occupied by a population
HERBIVORE a consumer that only eats plants
